TOPIC
There are three angles to leading a business, two of which manifest directly in the relationship with people: leadership and management.
Efficient leadership is based on the power to empower others. But the charisma of a leader is not enough. In order to be able to speak of efficient leadership, we need integrity, trust, empathy and empowerment. Efficient leadership also involves action from the leader, not just mind power.
To be efficient, a leader should be confident and certain, while being open and empathic at the same time. Efficient leadership entails the empowerment of the team through an interactive process, information, listening, development and creating a trustworthy environment. The credibility of a leader is obtained through collaboration, not domination.
The central element of efficient leadership is empowerment – the art of giving responsibility to other people to make things go in the desired direction, sense and performance.
A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way... Carlos Ghosn
A good manager is not necessarily a good leader, and a good leader is not necessarily a good manager. This is mostly due to the fact that the two functions are not the same, although they share a similar trait – basically, both need to lead the human capacity within an organization. In 1985 Warren Bennis and Burt Nanus gave a nice definition of the two roles in organizations:
Managers do things right and leaders do the right things.
Thus, leaders “conquer” their surroundings – the competitive environment – through vision and strategy and it is the managers’ role to implement this strategy efficiently. Efficient management is essential for the smooth functioning of an organization, because it deals with processes, planning, budgets, organization structures and the establishment plan, duties that help the organization do what it does. Without management, no matter how well it is led (from the leadership perspective), an organization will be disintegrated in disorganized chaos. At the same time, it is good to remember that management is not leadership – alone, it will not be able to take the company to a new direction.
Truly great leaders know the fact that they will not be present all the time and that one of their most important roles is recruiting, training and instructing their successor. They continue to lead until they are sure their successor is capable and ready to take over this role. Nine years before he retired from the management of General Electric, Jack Welch stated:
From now on, choosing my successor is the most important decision I’ll make. It occupies a considerable amount of time every day.
It often occurs in many organizations to prioritize leadership before management, but this is not a wise thing. Truly great organizations appreciate both equally: leaders who can identify opportunities and managers who transform these opportunities into reality.
Good leadership consists of showing average people how to do the work of superior people. - J.D. Rockefeller
