Mihai Ionac

Mihai Ionac is Professor of Surgery at the Victor Babes University of Medicine and Pharmacy from Timisoara and Head of the Clinic for Vascular Surgery and Reconstructive Microsurgery.

In 1997 he became Doctoris medicinae magna cum laude of the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nurnberg. Dr. Ionac was the founder of the Romanian Society for Vascular Surgery and president between 2014 - 2016. He was the president of the International Society for Experimental Research (2016-2018). Since 2015 dr. Ionac is Chairman of the National Registries and Territorial Expansion of the UEMS Board and Section of Vascular Surgery.

Clinical focus: Dr. Ionac is board certified in vascular surgery and plastic surgery. His clinical activity includes chronic limb ischemia, carotid and aortic disease, mesenteric ischemia, venous disease and diabetic foot, using both open and endovascular techniques. He formed a multidisciplinary team integrating vascular and plastic surgery for the salvaging of lower limbs with chronic ischemia and tissue loss.

Postgraduate training: dr. Ionac founded 1994 the Pius Branzeu Center, an experimental facility dedicated to research and training in microsurgery, flap surgery and vascular surgery. Following an extensive training period in Germany he started 1998 the International Seminars in Microsurgery of Vessels and Nerves and in 2002 the Seminars in Flap Dissection on Living Tissue. This program has been visited by more than 1600 surgeons from all over the world and is endorsed by the World Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery and European Board of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery. Since 2015 the Seminars in perforator flap surgery have been integrated in the European School of Reconstructive Microsurgery.

Dr. Ionac coordinates PhD programs, training program in vascular surgery and serves as reviewer for Microsurgery, Chirurgia and is associate editor of Acta Cirurgica Brasileira.
